I’ve been in this game for over 20 years, first as a consultant / web developer entrepreneur and then as a properly titled ‘Life Coach’.

The work that I have done has always been to support my quest to understand people. I am an artist primarily and the human being is my canvas, my blank page, my pleasure to encounter and express.

What you will find here are resources I have found to be extremely valuable not only for the sake of coaching, but for the sake of life and living.

I will curate these for you with a short synopsis of why I suggest the material that I do.

But as with all of my work, you are your own guru.

First, in 2015/2016, I created an online course for coaches. This video comes from that course, which I took off line quite some time ago.

This video to this day is still one of the best I’ve seen on coaching.

Books Suggestions Though Non-Typical :

NOTE : There are many more books than I have listed here. If you are seeking a specific topic you will have to ask me a more specific question.

Overachievement by John Eliot ( this book is not for everyone. It’s truthful and honest and continues to be spot on 20 years later. This is a book about performance. )
Prosperous Coach by Steve Chandler & Rich Litvin ( this was one of the many books I picked up on coaching early in my coaching practice. It’s a practical guide and worth looking at.
Supercoach, by Michael Neill ( Supercoach, the first edition for me, is still one of my favorite books on coaching. It’s simple and to the point. It is both practical for you, and secondly as a loose guide to assist others. )

Now let’s get to the really good stuff.

Wishcraft by Barbara Sher. ( She was a magnificent woman and her work is better than all the books listed above. Her videos are hilarious as well. Again, it’s honest and everyday type of material and it is extraordinary. Her book “Refuse To Choose” has liberated some of my clients. )
Freedom From The Known by J. Krishnamurti ( You could choose any of his titles and you would be moving in the right direction. This is not coaching as much as it is understanding the nature of the human. )
Awareness, by Anthony De Mello ( Once again, this book is a book that I have gifted, suggested, and have borrowed to others to never see again. I highly suggest watching his videos first, so that when you read the book, you get the experience of him reading them to you. )

I need to put a disclaimer here. I am not a coach like most people think. I came to coaching sideways. It’s the nature of the human mind that fascinates me.

Before I was coaching, I was studying Philosophy of Mind, Psychology, Literature, and so much more.

I studied near death experiences with a Professor who wrote a book about it. Even in highschool I was already coaching people, but not as a sports coach, but as a fan of seeing them succeed. I also studied marketing and copy writing, all related to human behavior and the psychology of human animals!

Before, I fell into coaching, I was also steeped in Buddhism and Buddhism is all about the nature of the mind and ending suffering. The reason why I share all of that with you is to say, I have my particular way into these topics.

It’s why I cut through the nonsense as well. That is often too much for people. It’s another reason why I have strong coaching agreements. What I’d like you to take away from this is that you have your own life experience to lean on.

Know your own mind, and be honest about it. You will be able to help a lot more people with greater ease if you do so.

Additional Resources : I have so many, but I will abstain from overwhelming you with information.

There’s a professor named Ellen Langer, Harvard and Yale trained, first female to be tenured in the Harvard Psychology department, one of the original creators of Positive Psychology. She has recently, as of 2024 become some what famous. She’s been a favorite of mine for the past 10 years since I was introduced to her work.

As a coach or human being, you should know her material. It’s very accessible.

Again, watch her POP talk video before reading her book. It will place her voice in your head. { at the time of this writing you can find it here Ellen Langer ]

There’s a coach name Nancy Kline. For me, she is similar to Barbara Sher but different. Do look her up and get familiar with her ways. A lot of coaches are enamoured with their own voices and projections.

If you feel that may be happening to you, as it does to all of us, do look into her work. Do it anyways. She’s a master.

Coaching Agreements

I paid 5,000 dollars for my first coach. It was terrible to be honest, but I learned quite a bit. One of the best things to come from that was the coaching agreements that we created.

I will not be sharing them here with you. They are for my personal paying clients. That’s the only way you will get to see them.

However…

I suggest you create something similar. Create clear agreements between yourself and your clients. These are non-contractual. They are more of a handshake agreement than anything else.

I’ve never had a contract with clients. It’s always done on honor and respect.

Coaching FOR MONEY.

You are here to get paid, to make money, to create a magnificent life.

You have to get two things through your mind and body right away.

You are a coach, a life coach, or some kind of coach. Own that declaration.
You are now the owner of business. To succeed financially in this game you must acknowledge that and run a proper-ish business.

Usually, to give you an example from my own coaching practice, I require full payment up front. There are no refunds. We take care of the money first that way we never have payments getting in the way.

Coaches who take payments often get nervous that they won’t get the entirety of the agreed upon amount. And often, they won’t.

It’s how it goes. And a needy coach is not who you want to be. It affects the work and weakens the coaching.

Being In It For The Money

Thank you first and foremost for even opening this page.

I will just get right to it and not waste your time or mine.

I talk to people solely about money and their over all health and wellbeing in all things.

It’s all connected.

We talk about the money first.

Now I am not saying the money comes first in life. That is not at all what I am saying here.

But the area most coaches, not all, but many ignore is the conversation around money.

It shows up in many ways, such as under charging, giving away infinite ‘free’ conversations.

Then there are the coaches who hesitate to share their agendas, and thus keep making “new” friends with people they don’t want to be friends with

…and on and on and on it goes…

I have worked with countless coaches and non-coaching clients, and I tell you the majority think they are fooling me with their feel good agendas, their I just want to help people and change the world…

I understand that sentiment because they do, but then it slips out subtlety…

Oops…

I see it in their eyes or hear it in their voice. They know I know, yet, they keep pretending I don’t, and thus they continue the delusions that their businesses suffer because they don’t know who to talk to, don’t know what to say, don’t know what to charge….

And any number of a hundred and one excuses.

Well…

That stops now and here with me.

We all want to make money doing what we enjoy, notice I did not say “love”, I said enjoy.

We all want to make money doing what we enjoy, that is enjoying our lives.

It’s true.

So that is the conversation I like to have with people.

And I like to do so in a confidential manner, protecting everyone’s anonymity.

I am trained in confidentiality and it is a principle I hold in high regard.

It’s incredible how many people can’t keep things to themselves.

It may terrify you a bit, but it’s only meant to be a wake up call.

It’s surely shook me…

You need to get this concept.

‘Life is life, the finances are a part of the coaching life, not the only thing.’

Your bank account is one measurement of your success in coaching, so it’s been said. Do you agree?

Life coaching is what I do to create my lifestyle, but I love teaching more. It’s just that I’m great at getting results for my clients.

And I love when you actually get what you want. ( Do you even know what you want? We will discuss that soon. )

It’s amazing to get messages from your clients like the one I shared yesterday.

But I haven’t made 100k coaching. Some may say I’m not successful.

But I do have clients who pay me, a client just renewed her agreement with me for $10,000 for the year.

It’s a lot of money for some, not for so much for many.

But you get to choose your worth.

It was an easy choice for me, because I love working with her and I was willing to do it at that rate.

( In the next email we’ll take a look at how that breaks down by the hour. )

You see there are clients you love, clients you like, clients you don’t want as clients…

It makes a massive difference knowing the difference.

I’m grateful to work with clients I love, and that’s not by mistake, but by design.

I’m only telling you this because most coaches don’t make over 20k per year, particularly the coaches who are needy and say they’ll work with anyone and everyone.

Read this, because you are going to want to understand why and how you can break through this number.

You are not going to be that person; you are going to be as successful as you want.

So choose a number you want to make this year and I will show how to reach it before we’re finished with the SQC email series.

Oh, by the way it’s not only important to work with clients you love, but coaches you enjoy too, coaches who scare and excite you a little bit.

Because there’s such thing as being a great client too.

It’s a relationship.

Sometimes I forget that you may not know me and that means you probably don’t know how I ended up doing what I do.

It’s a rebellious story and started when I was 3 years old, kind of.

It’s has to do with getting suspended 3 times from high school, sort of, more clues.

At the heart of it has to do with:

Freedom from authority…

Freedom to create…

A desire to own my time and mind…

And a refusal to get stuck in a job I hate.

It’s kind of funny looking back on it, because only now can I connect a few of the dots.

There are many things I keep private but…

However… The great stuff comes out in the private tribe.

Hi [ first name ]

I promised you I would share the hourly breakdown with this one client.

Tomorrow I will share a way to make 5 times as much using the same amount of time.

For now, this is the breakdown from working with one of my clients.

This is a complete simplification, but it’s fairly accurate.

One coaching agreement at $10k for the year…

4 conversations per month for 12 months:

That roughly equals 48 hours / year… 10,000 / 48 = $208/hr

But that’s not including the time my mind is thinking about her and working on accelerating her amazing life.

Also, we rarely talk for an hour, usually 45 minutes, and in truth we can crush it in 15 minutes, which we’ve done.

Also, sometimes we only speak 3 times per month. It’s the nature of it.

A more accurate number would be $280 / hour before taxes.

So you can see, coaching can be whatever works best for you, whatever you want.

There have been times when I will only work with a client for 4 months, sometimes 1 week, sometimes 1 day…

It’s your life.

By now you have finished the mini course.

It was mini for a reason, fast and easy to ingest.

Easy enough to get your mind moving. Powerful enough to get you started.

It’s the beginning.

Working it comes next!

But let’s get a target and vision put in your mind.

Because the truth is you want to make money and you want to do it in the way you want.

So…

There was something I promised you in one of the early emails; you read them right?

It’s the question around numbers and money and creating your lifestyle.

In coaching there’s a number that we go after and it’s based off of the idea of 1/3’s that’s thirds when written.

It’s crazy simple and I think you will fully enjoy the ease with which you can put this to work.

It’s performance based, and thus easy to remember and measure.

You simply take the number you want to earn this year and then multiply it by 3.

This gives you a number in dollars, euro, or yen or whatever your currency may be, that you will want to make in proposals sooner than later in the year.

It’s an approximation, but it’s been accurate in my world.

For example:

If you want to make 70k this year in coaching fees.

You will want to propose 210k to potential clients.

70K x 3 = 210k

Super simple…

Why does this work?

You have a clear target and it’s based on taking action.

You Know if you will do it, if you are doing it, because YOU KNOW…

There’s much more to this…

…like learning through experience.

But it’s a key measurement that will keep you honest with yourself.

And it lets you adjust if things are not working how you wish and if they are working it allows you to know where, when and who, are working it for you.

There’s an addition to this formula which you can get here.

It’s a game that many coaches play and it can work for you, but again, it’s a number.

Coaching is a numbers game in many ways…
